State and national award recipient Rashmi Ravishankar performed a Bharatanatyam recital at Sri Rama Seva Mandali. The programme started with an invocation song 'Vatapi Ganapatim Baje' in Hamsadwani Raaga and Adi Taala by Nidhi Ravishankar.
Then Rashmi Ravishankar, a student of Guru B Bhanumati and Guru Sheela Chandrasekhar of Nrityakalamandiram, started her Bharatanatyam recital with a 'Todayamangalam', an invocatory item 'Jaya Janaki Ramana', in praise of Lord Narayana, in his various forms. It was a fast item composed by great poet and saint Annamacharya, set to Raga Maalika and Taala Maalika.
This was followed by a Padam 'Shringapuradeeshwari', a composition of Sri Padmacharan, in praise of Goddess Sharada of Shringeri in Kalyani Raaga Adi Taala.
Rashmi's presentation of the Rama Varna, the central piece of the recital with bhakti rasa, was at its best. It was a unique piece. Rashmi's abhinaya depicting many episodes of Ramayana was excellent. Her purity in laya was evident in Nritta and Nritya, along with good abhinaya. Various scenes of Ramayana were depicted. 'Ramaa neeve na rakshakudavani nammi nanu', a composition of great composer Swati Thirunal in Raaga Kharaharapriya, Adi Taala was performed. This was choreographed by Guru Sheela Chandrasekhar.
The next item Purandara Dasa's devarnama 'Ada hodalli makkalu aadikombuvaru nodamma' in Raagamalika and Rupaka Taala had several scenes of Bhagavatha. Rashmi's presentation here was truly impressive.
Another Devarnama 'Narayana Hari Govinda' in Ragamalika and Adi Taala, a composition of Purandara dasa was presented beautifully. These two were choreographed by Guru B Bhanumati.
The next item, the composition of Lalgudi Jayaraman's Thillana in Mohana Kalyani Raaga and Aditaala, was fast paced and visually entertaining. Mangalam, the concluding item depicting the Dasha Aavatar of Lord Vishnu, gave a fitting finale to the Sri Rama Navami performance.
