Lohri festival was celebrated with great enthusiasm by the Punjabi Sikh community and North Indian families at SJR Verity Apartment on Kasavanahalli Main Road, off Sarjapur Main Road, on the night of January 13.
Dressed in ethnic attire, around 60 residents took part in the celebrations which began at around 8 pm with the lighting of bonfire by a group of women after offering prayer and pooja as the festival consists mainly of worshipping the fire. Residents gathered around the bonfire to celebrate Lohri. Thereafter, sweets, peanuts, puffed rice and popcorn were thrown into the flames and a mixture of water and unboiled milk (Kachi Lassi) was poured all around it.
Lohri festival is celebrated every year on January 13 (Hindu month of Paush or Magh). It is the harvest festival of Punjab, which welcomes the onset of spring. The festival marks the entry of the Sun in the 'rashi' (zodiac) of 'Makara' (Capricorn).
The first Lohri in a family, after marriage of a son or birth of a child, has a special significance and is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm. Though it is a native festival of Punjab, it is celebrated all across the country in Sikh/Hindu populations with equal enthusiasm.
Lohri celebrations are incomplete without singing and dancing, especially the traditional dance of 'Bhangra' and 'Gidda' and folk songs. A few Punjabi folk songs were sung to mark the occasion. Music was played and the residents danced around the bonfire.
