The residents of Koramangala 3rd Block gathered to celebrate the 62nd Republic Day on January 26. The National Flag was unfurled at two locations -- at the BBMP Jakkasandra Block Park at 8am and at the BBMP 3rd Block park at 8.30 am. Around 50 residents, including children and senior citizens, participated. Koramangala 3rd Block Residents Welfare Association President, T N Arvind Reddy unfurled the flag on behalf of the residents. Some of the residents had come dressed in the national colours --saffron, white and green.
Immediately after the unfurling of the flag, a Nature Walk was organised to educate residents on the trees of Koramangala 3rd Block. Vijay Thiruvady, a trustee of the Bangalore Environment Trust, is a renowned authority on trees. Every Sunday, Vijay conducts a Lalbagh tree walk for
tree enthusiasts within Lalbagh botanical gardens. Koramangala 3rd Block is home to a rich diversity of tree types of trees, including stately rain trees, ficus Krishnae, breadfruit, Kadamba and of course the majestic banyan.
A group of enthusiastic residents followed Vijay around the trees of the block and a number of them made copious notes. Following the walk, it was spontaneously decided to conduct a tree census in the block and number all the trees so that they may be better protected. The tree census activity is targeted to be completed by June 2012.
