At the conclusion of a free camp for distribution of aids and appliances to the physically challenged, the Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain, applauded the efforts by the Mahaveer Vikalangula Sahayaka Samithi , an NGO working for disabled . He expressed satisfaction regarding the work being undertaken by the Samithi in the domain . While extending support in philanthropic activities, the Mayor said that the Samithi should extend its services to other parts of the city.
But what is perhaps ironical , is the fact that even though he expressed his commitment to the welfare of disabled persons by strengthening Vikasam programme, there has been no progress on the part of GHMC for welfare of the disabled. Proposed during former Mayor, Banda Karthika Reddy's period, the Vikasam programme is still in an initial stage. Supposed to be extended to 18 circles of GHMC, it needs to be worked on for providing full-fledged support for the physically handicapped.
According to law, the physically handicapped should get at least 3 percent of the budget, but the budget for 2012-13 does not accommodated the share. From the Rs 3,600 crore budget, the UCD gets only Rs 25 crore and developmental schemes like Vikasam have no allocation at all.
The camp had been organized by Mahaveer Vikalangula Sahayaka Samithi in coordination with GHMC, and saw the participation of notables like the City Mayor.
