Aryan Goveas’ improved performances in the national junior tennis circuit and his steady climb in the under-14 All India Tennis Association’s Rankings was rewarded by him being selected to the Indian under-14 team that will participate in the ITF 14 and Under Group 1 Championships, to be held in Manila, Phillipines, for two weeks beginning March 5. The Championships are being supported by the ITF Grand Slam development Fund.
Aryan celebrated his inclusion in the India under-14 team by winning the boys under-18 singles title at the AITA Talent Series Tennis Tournament, which concluded in Aurangabad on February 3. The 13-year-old unseeded Aryan defeated Karnataka’s B S Rahul 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Aryan also finished runner-up in the boys under-16 and the doubles, making it a rewarding week of tennis.
He is currently ranked No, 3 in India. His steady climb in the rankings can be gauged from the fact that he began 2011 ranked No. 46 in the country and finished the year ranked No. 3.
His improved performance in the second half of the year can also be attributed to the two months he spent in Europe, training at the Tennis Val academy in Valencia, Spain and then playing tournament in Normandy, France. His talent was acknowledged in Normandy after he won an Under-14 tournament there.
The three-member Indian team also includes B R Nikshep from Karnataka and Alex Solanki from Delhi and will be accompanied by coach, former Davis Cupper Narendranath Surat.
