The grand carnival of Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala, was celebrated at Fernhill Gardens on September 17, 2011. The event was organised by the women's wing led by Anuradha Rao, Sally Abraham, Riviera Shyam Sundar and Mary Joseph with full cooperation and support from MB Rao, President, and Abraham Verghese, Secretary, of the Fern Hill Gardens Apartments Association.
The "Pookalam" (floral design) was placed at the entrance of the apartment and at the entrance of community hall. The participation shown not only by the Malayalis, but also by the non-Malayalis of the apartment added to the success of the event.
The programme began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp ("Nila Vilakku") and a short Sanskrit prayer. Abraham Verghese addressed the audience and explained the mythological background behind Onam.
There were variety of entertainment programmes, which included events like 'Kaikottikali', 'Thiruvathirakali' and 'Vallamkali'. The children presented a skit depicting the Asura king Mahabali and the Maha Vishnu's incarnation 'Vamana - the dwarf'. The programme ended with the lavish 21 items Onam Sadhya in which about 100 residents participated.
Speaking to Cityplus, MB Rao said: "It is a triumph of people's enthusiasm to come together and celebrate an event like this. It has reflected the unity of the residents in full."
Abraham Verghese said: "The Malayalis of Fernhill Garden Apartments have kept up the spirit of Onam with a very lively entertainment programme, which was followed by the Onam Sadhya in which people of different states participated and enjoyed. This has encouraged us to celebrate Onam as well as other festivals on a grand scale with full participation from all the residents."
