Kalyani Potekar, a student of Fergusson College, Pune, is the youngest girl of the country to compete in the world’s highest motor sport event ‘The Maruti Suzuki Raid De Himalaya’.
Kalyani is competing in the Raid Xtreme (Alpine) category. This is a category for bikers who are first-timers competitors at the Raid. Kalyani is also the first girl to be competing in this category. Kalyani, a student of B Sc IIIrd year at Fergusson College is 20 years old.
She has been preparing for the event by practicing intensively on her motorcycle. Recently, she rode for 14 hours on her bike from Pune to Dewas, where her family stays. “It took me a little longer because there was heavy rain,” said Kalyani. Her father Vir Dhawal Potekar accompanied her during the long drive in his car.
Kalyani is an all-rounder in sports. She is an accomplished horse rider. She also does paragliding and skiing.
The 15th Maruti Suzuki Raid De Himalaya started from Shimla and proceeded to the highest mountain passes of Khardung La, Wari La and other high mountain stretches.
