
For the multi-talented Nihaarika, honing her various talents while managing to excel in academic is easy thanks to her high energy level. Cityplus spoke to this young prodigy about her interests and achievements.
Young kids nowadays can't have enough; with energy levels raging high, they excel at both academics and extracurricular activities. One such girl who is creating her own fan club in Aundh and in DAV School is G Nihaarika.
Bharatnatyam began at 4
Nihaarika began learning Bharatnatyam when she was four years old under the guru Mrudula Gaikwad. She is doing her sixth year now and has learnt many dances under her tutelage. "I like to dance, Bollywood style and classical as well. I am aware that having a good classical base for dance is essential so that I can groove to any kind of music. I think of classical training as a good base."
Excelling in school and academics
A topper in school, she has also completed six levels of UCMAS with good score and is an active participant in all her school competitions and has won many firsts and seconds. But for her dance is an art form and which is not concerned with studies. This is something more of a leisure activity rather than an activity which is being done with force. "She will be appearing for the second level of Bharatnatyam examination this year. Each activity has its own time and is not interconnected," says her mother Savitha.
Learning Carnatic music too
She also started Learning Carnatic Music under her guru Rama Parthasarathy about three years ago. "I will appear for my third level of exam this year. I can sing varnams and kirthanams quite well now." She has also sung as part of her group at the Ayyappa temple in Sangvi and the Balaji Temple at Sus-Pashan Road. According to her mother, she has a good voice which needed a little guidance so as to tap the potential and hence she has joined the music class.
Amongst her hobbies and habits, reading tops the list. She loves to read and she has read many books of Roald Dahl, the Magic School Bus and the Magic Tree House series etc. She also loves to draw and paint and has won prizes from Avaya Life Insurance and HDFC for her paintings. The latest craze for her is to reach competitive level in swimming. As she says, " All in a days work!"
