It's hard to believe that at 50 years of age Dr Arun Thareja is into super biking. This resident of Pashchim Vihar is not only an eminent ENT specialist but also a well-known face in the superbiking interface of India.
Dr Arun has spent close to three decades in super biking. He is also the founder of the superbikers club GODS (Group of Delhi Superbikers), a club which every year goes on trips all across the country. Blessed with two kids Arunima and Avirudha, Dr Thareja spends equal time with his family. His wife Dr Seema Thareja and both the kids too know his passion for bikes.
The beginning
Thareja recalls, "In 1984, I completed my MBBS and I was asked by my father to buy a vehicle as a reward. In place of buying a car I bought a superbike of Yamaha which is still with me. Till date I have rode almost 50 superbikes of different categories." In his garage Dr Thareja has still three new superbikes which he rides on every Sunday with his club members.
The passion
Dr Thareja spends close to an hour with his bikes almost every day. He likes cleaning and repairing them. One can see latest models of bikes in his garage. He also has a small service centre which he uses for repairing and maintaining his bikes. He shares, "During the servicing of my first bike I used to sit with the mechanics and try to know about the machine. Slowly, I started servicing and repairing my bike on my own, which I continue till date."
Dr Thareja has taken almost 40-50 road trips to various places. He has recently been to Ladakh. "Once we were trapped in heavy snow fall and snow storm during Reddi, one of the toughest rally in India. Revathi, the famous actress was also with us on that trip. We were cut off from the world for three days and somehow got recued by the Army." Dr Thareja has also travelled to seven countries in Europe and Californila on bike.
The club GODS
Group of Delhi Superbikers was founded by Dr Arun Theraja way back in 2000 with only three members in 1998 and now there are 50 members. The sole purpose of the group is to promote biking in a positive way and to increase the awareness amongst the general public about biking as a passion and a sport rather than a simple means of transportation.
Future plan
Dr Thareja says that he and his club would promote superbiking in future and for that they would also start using the newly constructed tracks in Greater Noida. Besides that Dr Thareja has a great desire to have his next superbike in his garage that is the Italian Tucati ZX 12Hrs.
Fitness mantra
He shares his fitness mantra, "Right since the beginning of my biking and medical career, I started body building and till date I have been going to the gym. I want to say that biking has played a great role in keeping me fit."
