‘Azaan’ is a call for prayer. It is a call for humanity, brotherhood, love, friendship and peace. The members of Azaan worship music and it is the oxygen for the team of four.
Journey
On a fateful day in 2007, music buffs Chetan and Bipin met at Pantnagar University hostel and started playing at college and university events. Chetan Sharma, copy writer in advertising, is the lead guitarist for Azaan and Bipin Vishwakarma is the vocalist who also assists Chetan with guitar.
The duo started playing under the name-Pineapple raita-to what they believed was best blend of sweet, sour and salty songs. Later, inspired by super commando, Dhruv, they changed the name to 'Udan tashtari ke bandhak'.
More members join
After a year in 2008, Mohan Singh Negi, a horticulturist by profession, got associated with the duo and joined in as a drummer.
His fascination for the instrument got him a collection of t-shirts with the chest print depicting drums, drummers and Gumby Pinto, his favourite drummer. With amazing sense of humour, he is jovial but has seriousness towards drumming.
Ritesh Mishra, a journalist by profession, joined as lyricist later.
The band composes raw music and do not restrict themselves from moving from one genre to another. They love experimenting, being innovative and impromptu.
Following the passion
As drumming is the only passion he follows, Mohan said, "We at Azaan believe in practice. We have been pursuing music for the sake of satisfaction and fire for the art. With no formal trainings, what has helped us all this time is jamming. We have been having jam session about four days a week. Jamming is our practice, it is our formal training and it is our ibaadat, as we may call it."
Performances
Azaan has been performing in various cities across the country. Their other performances include Raipur, Nainital, Bhopal, Sahibababd and other cities.
They are climbing the staircase to success steadily.
Accolades
They have bagged first spots at many rock band wars and university competitions. They won first prize at Anunaad in Dehradun.
"Our latest performance Alakriti at Pantnagar was a back home feeling for all of us. They say it's the best to return back to the place from where you started. We were happy to perform at our university", told Chetan.
They believe that the young generation is waking up to this side of music. They expressed when they started performing, there was not much craze about the raw music or rock shows. It has gradually evolved over a period of time.
Future plans
Now-a-days, rock bands are focusing on recordings and fame packed in a compact disk, Azaan has a different path to follow. Bipin said, "We will concentrate on live performances more than recording our songs. The message is louder when we perform live. It is a sure shot way to establish the bond with the audience."
"Our latest song Ghumao… is a song about change. It's a change to kick corruption, nepotism and terror out of the system. The song is lived by each one of us day in and day out", added Ritesh.
