Dance can cherish, rejuvenate and help a person recuperate from serious disorders. After breaking its boundaries in the western world, Dance Therapy has made its way to India as well.
Dance Therapy
Many are undergoing dance therapy today to understand the power of dance. Dance therapist Tripura Kashyap reveals, "Dance therapy, or dance movement therapy is the psychotherapeutic use of movement. When a foetus is in a mother's womb, it moves. Children too are spontaneous in their movements. However, as we grow we restrict our movements as per our comfort zones. These movements are rejuvenated through dance therapy which helps in curing many diseases and disabilities," said Tripura.
In her sessions, Tripura lets her students explore their movements initially. She then in accordance with their disorders or diseases tells them expressions and dance movements. Many people with Autism, learning disabilities, mental retardation, deaf and hearing impaired, blind and visually impaired, elderly and those with eating disorder have benefited from dance therapy. Recalling one incident Tripura tells, "I was once introduced to an autistic girl who was violent and was scared to make eye contact. After attending dance therapy sessions, she started maintaining eye contact with others and understood their expressions. She is doing well in her life now. Through dance therapy we cannot make a blind person get eyes, but we can make him/her confident."
There are many dance therapy institutes in the city today. A person while enrolling for dance therapy should properly converse about his disorder or disease with the therapist and should also ask the therapist to design the duration of his treatment.
