The residents of Abhishek Society in Goregaon East believe in saving water, and thus have been busy with practising rain water harvesting.

Despite various campaigns being conducted in the city to promote rainwater harvesting, only few societies have understood its importance. Abhishek Society in Goregaon East is one of them. The residents of this society have come together and made an investment in this project, that is today benefiting them, even during water shortage problems. Abhishek Society has also inspired other societies to start rainwater harvesting.
The procedure needs an initial investment for an apparatus that will help store rainwater from roof tops, which would be later beneficial for various purposes. This is one of the best methods to conserve water, which  in today’s times is one of the most important and scarce natural resources.
"Everyday we face so many water problems. Three years back, all the members in our society decided to set up the water harvesting apparatus here. Although, we did not face water shortage on a regular basis, couple of years back, the city had faced water problems due to scanty rains. So we thought if times change, the 24-hour-water supply that we get will be curtailed. That is how the idea of water harvesting came in our minds, and we adopted the system then,” says Y Kashyap, the man who initiated the campaign in the society.
“We do not use the water for drinking purposes, but we can always use it during crisis. Besides, our residential complex has nurseries and gardens for which we use the water. It gives a lot of happiness and relief to know that we are saving water as much as we can. So the more we conserve it, the more we'd benefit," he adds.
Y Rupani, a resident of the society says, “Instead of completely depending on the civic authorities for a long term solution for water problems, we decided to first put our own efforts to save water.  I think if the government makes it compulsory to save rainwater in our state, like they did in Tamil Nadu, our city’s water crisis will be solved.”
