The storm water drain at 25th 'B' Main, Sector-1, is giving a lot of problems to the residents. The drain passes through both sides of the road. On one side of the road, there is a park and the other side, there is a residential area. Visitors to the park find it difficult to walk or sit on the benches because of mosquito bites and the foul smell coming from the drain.
Similar problems are faced by the residents staying adjacent to the drain because of the stench. The pipe there is broken and so the sewage water flows into the storm water drain. The drain is full of weeds. The residents feel that the drain should be covered with cement slabs. Three are makeshift houses on the vacant site adjoining the open storm water drain. This is posing danger to the children who play there at times.
Chandra Shekhar, a resident, said: "An open drain is dangerous as anyone can fall into it and also since it's on the main road the foul smell comes straight to the nose of the passersby."
Sunita Sivakumar, another resident, said: "I regularly visit the park for an evening walk. Though there is a fence separating the park and the drain, still we feel as if the drain is part of the park, because it is so close that the smell and the mosquitoes are inside the park. We were all planning to write a complaint and send it to the authorities."
Nagendra, assistant engineer BWSSB, said: "The problem lies with the flow; we will divert the direction of the flow so that the sewage water doesn't flow into the drain. We have already prepared an estimated budget and sent it to the head office."
