As a holiday falls along with the weekend, it is pleasure time for all. Unfortunately, it is also the time for trouble for the residents of Malleshwaram with cleanliness in the area going for a toss.
With the recent Maha Shivarathri festival falling on Monday, the streets of the area were piled up with garbage right from Saturday.
With most of the workers being unavailable, the residents say that the condition is the same every time. "This trend is seen during every such combined holiday week. Garbage piles up and we are left with no option. We do understand that they also need a holiday for the festival, but that is not an excuse for not working on Saturday, which is a working day. It only adds on to their burden as they will have more work to do on the corresponding day. But it is really sad to see such huge piles of garbage on main roads, especially when it is an auspicious week to come," said Ramamurthy, a resident of the area.
Not just in the bylanes, but even the Margosa Road and Sampiege Road - the heart of the area - were seen to have heaps of garbage on its sides. With huge trees adorning the area, the leaves itself add up to make a huge heap adding to the existing waste. The festive season is also claimed to be a time when Malleshwaram turns out to be really dirty. Being one of the oldest areas with heritage temples, it has thousands of devotees thronging the area during this time, adding more to the problem.
"One should see the bylanes near the temples during the festive season; it gets dumped with garbage especially with the leftover 'prasadams'. One can understand the condition on the day but the authorities don't take the required measures even on the second day. It gets rotten and stinking all over, making us difficult to walk across. They should find some alternative for the same as they know that it is the same every year," added another resident.
With the problem persisting on a regular basis, it's high time the authorities took action on the same. When contacted, Environment Officer, BBMP, said: "We will surely look into the matter and taken the action soon."
