Amongst the most popular beaches of Goa -- and in the country -- is the Baga beach. This crescent-shaped beach, with its whitish brown sands, is a famous joint for water-sports activities like para-sailing, jet skiing, body boarding and surfing. No doubt, it's one of the most happening beaches on the coast. You'll find everything from water sports to fine dining restaurants there, along with a pulsating nightlife.
Located 16 kilometres from the capital Panaji, Baga beach is an extension of the Calangute beach, which is surrounded by beautiful cliffs, besides coconut and palm trees; and Anjuna Beach to the north. These wonderful and natural surroundings with an idyllic ambience make it an ideal holiday destination for every one. The Baga River flows along one side of the beach and on the other far end lies black rocks.
Ruled by the Portuguese for a long period, the European influence blended with local conventions to make Goa distinctively lively and dynamically different from the rest of the country. Goa, essentially a cluster of hamlets, is very ethnic in feel while being entirely modern in flair. Goa celebrates Liberation Day every year on December 19.
BEACH ATTRACTIONS:
Water sports are a huge attraction. You can go para-sailing, jet skiing, body boarding and surfing, all at a price of Rs 900 to Rs 1,200. Also wake boarding, windsurfing and kite surfing, are available.
Dolphin spotting trips and island trips can be done with additional costs. If you are not interested in water sports, you can simply content with lazing on the sun lounges in front of the beach shacks all day and feasting on a steady supply of food, beer, and cocktails.
The beach sees a lot of international tourists sun-bathing in its golden sun, as a grove of palms gently sway in the wind. Backwater crocodile and dolphin spotting down the Mandovi River to the Zuari River is another favourite pastime for the tourists.
The main road running through the Baga town is lined with several bars, tandoori terraces and handicraft shops. You can find shops selling handicrafts, jewellery and beach wear, besides snacks stalls.
WELL-KNOWN FOR ITS NIGHTLIFE:
The nights here at the beach come alive with families and couples going to the dance-clubs, lazing at the beach-front, walking by the shore, or enjoying sea-food. Nightlife is the liveliest and is the perfect
expression of the Goan and Western mix of culture.
Restaurants will take your breath away with its magical setting and scrumptious food. Beach shacks specialising in seafood, serve delicious Goan cuisine, which isn't too spicy for the Western palate. You can dine on a table right on the beach. As the sun goes down, it is perfect for romantic night time dining, and there's live music too.
BEST TIME TO VISIT:
Avoid the summers (June - Oct) and head for Baga Beach between November and February.
