To fulfil his long cherished dream, JF Williams invested his retirement fund to start an old age home. Today, he works tirelessly for all those staying there.
'Where there's will, there's a way' - this saying is apt for JF Williams. Suffering from skin cancer, he lost an eye at the age of 41 and has undergone five major eye operations but his enthusiasm for his old age home - 'Hope' at the age of 68 is unbeatable. Located at Palam Vihar, Gurgaon, this old age home is his source of happiness and motivation in life.
After taking voluntary retirement from a senior post in Indian Oil Corporation, William invested his post retirement funds to realise his dream to start an old age home. High on life, JF Williams walks 20 kms from his home near IFFCO Chowk to his old age home in New Palam Vihar. "I feel very happy in whatever I do
because I believe it's God's command and I have to do it."
Hope has five spacious rooms with attached bathrooms and a dormitory where ten people can easily stay. His dedication for his old age home can be understood by the fact that even on the day when his son was getting married he was at his old age home waiting for a new guest to arrive. Williams also plays the role of a cook and caretaker of this old age home as he says that so far he has found no one who would work for the abandoned old people with extreme zeal and love.
A conversation with Williams tells us about his struggle to raise the old age home and also his inexorable resolve. "I fought for three years with the local authorities to build a concrete road to the old age home. Once I start something I don't give up easily," he said, thrusting forward a folder bursting with copies of his letters to various authorities. He even struggled for about three years to exempt his old age home from tax that HUDA levies here on per square yard basis. And he succeeded in both his endeavours.
JF Williams who was in the board of directors at Delhi YMCA in the past, had worked with missionary of charity. "This place is open to people of all religion. When a mother delivers a child, God just sends the child. He doesn't make him Hindu, Muslim or Christian." We just hope his noble thought of unity and love is imbibed by each and every individual on this planet.
