The population of stray dogs in the city has been increasing and to control their population, sterilisation is done. Cityplus does a reality check in your area.

In Janakpuri and Raja Garden, stray dogs are creating many problems despite their regular sterilisation carried out by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
Every week, 15 to 20 dogs are being sterilised. Not only this, every month approximately 50 complaints are lodged regarding the sterilisation of stray dogs in West Zone area.
"We are facing numerous problems due to stray dogs. Dog bite cases have increased in our area. Authorities should speed up the sterilisation process and devise a way to solve the stray dogs menace," said Ashish Sarangi, a resident of C block Janakpuri.
"We cut the ears of dogs that have been sterilised to demarcate them from others. We also leave do not leave the mad or diseased dogs in the area again," said councillor Promila Ghai.
At present, nine NGOs are working in all over Delhi with the MCD for sterilising stray dogs.
MCD picks the dogs and hands over them to the NGOs looking after the respective area. Surgical sterilisation is done by the NGOs in which genital organ of the dog both male and female are removed through a surgical process. After this, dogs are kept under the post operative care for five days and are left to the same area from where they were picked.
"We receive around four to five calls every day and vans are sent directly to the areas which require immediate action," said Moolchand, a senior official in MCD's veterinary department.
Most of the complaints come from Raja Garden, Rajouri Garden and Paschim Vihar. The dogs are also vaccinated along with sterilisation.

What the rule says
As per Animal Birth Control Dog Rules 2001, killing or dislocating of dogs from one place to another is a crime. The dog has to be left in the area from where he was picked. Every dog is also given an anti-rabies vaccine.

Jeevan Jyoti Animal Welfare, Sonadi Charitable Trust, Friendicoes Seca, Sanjay Gandhi Animal Care Centre, Animal India Trust, Jeevashram Foundation, Cure and Care Animals, Help Foundation, Pet Animal Welfare Society are the current nine NGOs working for the MCD.
