The Sankey Park Walkers' Association has come up with a unique initiative to enhance the beauty of Sankey Tank by bringing nearly 35 ducks and geese from Mumbai.

At a function organised on Friday, February 10, local MLA Dr C N Ashwanthnarayan released the birds in the tank in the presence of Corporators Dr Shivaprasad and Manjunath Raju. "This step is one of our initiatives in enhancing the beauty of the lake. Last year we had released nearly 100 ducks and geese in the tank and now we have added 35 more. Special steps were taken by our president, Dr Anand, to make this possible with proper coordination in arranging and repairing the duck shelters in the tank. We will surely take more steps to maintain the beauty of Sankey Tank," said Vijayakumar, secretary, Sankey Park Walkers' Association.
Special measures are being taken at the tank for the newcomers with two beautiful floating duck shelters and also two rows of fixed shelters on the banks. Two patrol boats are also allotted for the purpose of feeding the ducks and monitoring their movements by the park supervisor Gopal. Special veterinarian Dr Shivaram, who is also the treasurer of the association, has been entrusted with the task of monitoring these ducks. They are fed with nutritious pellet feeds provided and prescribed by him, in addition to the naturally available food in the tank.
"We have taken all the measures to take care of these birds. The tank fence on the northern side of the tank abutting the private property has to be restored and rebuilt to prevent the ducks from getting lost there. The ducks also need to be protected from the fisherman entering the tank illegally. The menace of rats also is to be controlled. We are also ready to invite philanthropists to contribute liberally for the welfare of the ducks," the secretary said.
With special measures taken, the residents can soon expect to see a better Sankey Tank.
