The increasing number of dog strays in Indiranagar is giving sleepless nights to its resident.
The dumping of garbage on roadside in some parts of Indiranagar has added misery for commuters. On account of this, there is a sharp rise in stray dog menace. Also in danger are pedestrians and two wheeler drivers who come after 11 pm as they are chased mercilessly by street dogs.
With increasing complaints from residents, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has to take steps to prevent dog menace in the locality. Gowramma, resident of HAL 3rd stage says, "After 6 pm, we cannot walk in the area, especially children cannot play. Dogs in groups stare and growl at children. It is very scary."
Dr. Parveez Ahamed Peeran joint director of animal husbandry said, "This year we are planning to outsource the stray dog animal birth control and vaccination programme to non-government organizations and we will also perform 6,500 permanent surgeries. We are preparing to sterilize lakh dogs. Around one and half lakh anti-rabbis vaccination will be given to dogs this year."
He further added, "Last year, we had done 74,343 surgeries, 69,141 sterilization and 1,16,416 vaccinations. When compared to the last year, we are regularly carrying out the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme. It can be noted that we had 24,120 dog bite cases registered from April to December. The BBMP animal husbandry department will extend full support to control dog menace in the area.
Ajay, a resident of Cambridge Layout says, "CUPA has been a part of BBMP's stray dog sterilization (ABC-Animal Birth Control) programme for the last 10 years. BBMP with the help of CUPA should act early this year. As breeding season for dogs has started, there will be increase in dog bite instances. Also, garbage clearance in the mornings will keep the dogs away."
"BBMP's vehicle, Action-Cum-Mobile Surgical Units which were launched in 2010 to implement the ABC and Anti Rabies Vaccination (ARV) programmes for all the 198 wards, should work in tandem to avoid dog bite instances," added Ajay.
