Music is the beat of life for the passionate Mythreyi Mane, a home maker.
who is bent upon carrying the essence of Dasara Nudigalu and Kirtanas through music to the modern generation. She feels "Time is Money". She teaches Carnatic music, devaranama and bhajans without charging a paisa.
Mythreyi is trained in classical Carnatic music and veena instrument and thinks a life time is not sufficient to gain mastery over all the aspects of music. She has been learning veena instrument for over 40 years and Carnatic vocal music for about 25 years now.
She said: "I love music. I have huge collection of notes, which I want to teach whoever is interested. I want music to spread and music is not my property, I have also been trained and it is my responsibility to give it back to this world."
Songs on Krishna her favourite
Her favourite is Krishna's songs and singing at temples. She feels 'taala' is very important and with so many new raga and 'taala' music is a never exhaustive field. She said: "I even now go to RK Padhmanabha sir's class who comes up with many new raga and 'taala'. My other wish is to learn veena from worldwide acclaimed Suma Sudhindra."
Mythreyi, with group of women, gives music recitals, where she first gives the meaning of the Dasara nudigalu and then sings, so that, the public understand the depth of the composition. She has also given music recitals in theatre.
Mythreyi was enticed by Baba's bhajans that were sung in her neighbour's house, who first learnt Om Jai Jagdish Hare song from them. Later she went on to learn music and veena from many prominent musicians. She said: "I learnt music at Vagdevi Vani Vidhyalaya from when I was in 5th standard. I used get 5 paisa for bus which I used to save and use it to pay for fees and to reach far off places to learn music. My paternal aunt was my support, inspiration and idol for all my life. My gratitude goes out to her and my guru Janaki Miss."
Active in dance and theatre too
She actively participates in theatre, dance (though suffers from acute arthritis), composes poetry for people's birthday/anniversary/wedding/shop openings and loves to cook new dishes. She said: "My one beat is music and the other is writing poetry."
She feels her first solo performance in college was the most memorable where she won a silver cup that she treasures even now. A kacheri with her Guru KS Changalarayappa when in her 10th standard is her most treasured memory. She said: "I didn't even know the value of music at that age but used to learn it out of interest. My Guru identified my talent and with consent from my family, I gave a kacheri with my master. Another instance is when I was giving a fancy dress performance and someone's cassette got spoilt and I sang Krishna Nee Begane Baro song on the spot adored in a police dress. One person said: My music is as good as my performance."
Future plans
She is documenting all the musical records, CDs and literature in a methodological way so that it can be used by future generation. She said: "I have over 4000 song collection. I don't want it to die with me. So I am documenting it. My biggest fear is what if my collection is forgotten and not used by anyone…"
