One of the busiest crossings in Dwarka, KM Chowk has become infamous for wrong lane driving and violation of traffic rules.
Commuters often use the wrong lane from the chowk towards Sector 12 residential areas or towards the societies in Sector 11. While crossing the chowk to go towards Sector 12 residential areas, one has to take a U turn from the cut near Bensup Hospital and while going towards Sector 12 metro station or towards the societies in Sector 11, one has to take U turn from the metro station Sector 11. But commuters ignore the U turn and take the wrong lane.
Despite the presence of police and barricades, people take short cuts to enter the service roads or main roads. Earlier, there were no signals but now red lights have been installed. Despite that, people jump the red lights and avoid taking U turn and in turn cause traffic chaos.
Ramesh Chand, a resident of Sector 12 Pocket 5, said, "Earlier, when there was no red light, traffic chaos
was common during morning or evening hours. Now there is a red light but the traffic chaos has not reduced. I have seen that till 9 in the morning there is no police and that is why people freely breaks traffic rules. There must be a traffic official in busy hours."
"Vehicles coming from Aashirvad Chowk, Sector 11 metro station and from Sector 19 cross the road without taking a U turn, from the cut near Bensup Hospital. Awareness campaigns must be conducted to make people practice U-turn and respect the law," said a social activist MP Singh a resident of Shubham Apartments Sector 12.
People living in the surrounding areas say that the nature of violation of traffic rules at the chowk is only due to casual approach of the police.
A resident of Sector 11, Vijay Kumar, said, "To check wrong lane driving, the cut near the petrol pump was closed but still those who want to go to the societies like Seema CGHS take the wrong lane to avoid the U-turn from Sector 11 metro station."
Traffic awareness activist and a resident of Sector 9 Preeti Goel said, "People have to change their way of thinking and follow the traffic rules even in the absence of traffic officials."
Traffic Inspector Ved Prakash Tomer, who recently took charge in Dwarka, said, "I have visited the areas around KM Chowk and checked the issue. There are violations of traffic rules and our police personnel are taking action. For more awareness and to check the violation at the KM Chowk we will carry awareness campaigns and drives soon."
