Road near dug-up drain at Panjagutta caves in.
Apparently learning lessons from past is not something GHMC seems to be good at. The cracking open of the road near Model House in Pujnagutta is an example of the same.
A similar incident had happened in the past when a stretch of road had caved in near Necklace road. Luckily, no mishap occurred.
And now this - A portion of road near the dug up drain at Model house on the Punjagutta-Khairatabad main road sunk in due to an internal land slide the other day. The incident occurred at about 2 am in the morning, following which the road was closed for vehicular traffic causing inconvenience to commuters.
The contractor working on the infamous storm water drain in consultation with the GHMC, immediately swung into action and filled up the crack with about two tonnes of concrete. Traffic was restored on the road
within 10 hours. Experts suggest the reason for the crack can be the washing away of underground soil due to leakages in the water and sewerage lines, and mainly due to the huge dug up cavity of still incomplete storm water drain.
Cityplus had earlier reported and hinted that this could lead to a mishap and the GHMC officials had given their word to complete the works in the area, at the earliest. But, as usual the shopkeepers and commuters kept complaining and the authorities preferred to look the other way. It is ironical that despite repeated stories published and official assurances, the work is still going on at a snail's pace.
Our sources in the GHMC say that technically, before digging any area around a main road, GHMC is supposed to scan the soil to check for any gaps underneath which could lead to a crack or an internal landslide. But in this case this procedure was not followed.
The contract had been awarded to Sai Constructions and the contractor seems to be in a fix over the lackadaisical attitude of other Departments who are supposed to pitch in and help complete this storm water drain work at the earliest.
The contractor now claims that the work will be completed within 20 days and the dug up portion near Model House will be filled, relieving the shopkeepers and the commuters of their prolonged misery.
It's been more than a year that people of the area have been suffering and waiting - can they can afford to wait for 20 more days, is the question that begs an answer.
The cause
Experts suggest the reason for the crack can be the washing away of underground soil due to leakages in the water and sewerage lines.
