The roundabouts at several crossings are all set to be demolished by the civic authorities to keep a check on growing traffic chaos in the city.
The civic agencies including Traffic Police, HUDA and MCG will remove and restructure the roundabouts at Bristol Chowk, MDI Chowk, Sector 4-7 Chowk, Lt Atul Kataraia Chowk, Telephone Exchange Chowk and Subhash Chowk.
As per the authorities, the roundabouts will either be removed or reduced in size as per the requirement. The restructured roundabouts will have a radius 200 meter as 'No Parking Zone' for uninterrupted traffic flow.
Red lights will also be installed in the area, if need be. The work is expected to finish in a couple of months.
This decision has been taken following a high level meeting jointly held by Gurgaon Traffic Police (GTP), Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG), Haryana Development Authority (HUDA), National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and Haryana State Industrial Development Corporation (HSIDC).
It is worth highlighting roundabouts at HUDA City Centre, Golf Course Road, Moar Chowk and Sector 27-42
Chowk were removed a few days ago that eased traffic congestion.
"The roundabouts were made long back for smooth flow of traffic as per the requirement of the then population and number of vehicles. However, the city's population as well as the number of two wheelers and four wheelers have shot up exponentially over the past several years. So there was an urgent need to take some concrete steps to benefit the public," said HUDA Administrator, Dr Praveen Kumar.
Town and Country Planning department claims that as per bylaws the roundabouts were relevant if the vehicle per hour movement was not more than 5,000. "The rotaries and roundabouts have no relevance if the number of vehicles on road rise manifold. In the meantime, if it is converted into a signalised junction, we need to deploy traffic cops to handle the traffic," said Bharti Arora, DCP (Traffic).
Residents' Welfare Associations (RWAs) and public representatives of different areas have been making frantic demands to resolve the traffic related problems in their respective areas. Their effort seems to bear fruits soon in the near future.
