The civic body of Navi Mumbai is planning to start semi-English schools for students who cannot afford private English medium schools
Many children from Navi Mumbai are from the lower income group and cannot afford private English medium schools. Thus the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has taken up an initiative to start semi- English schools in the city. The NMMC semi-English schools will start from the next academic year, 2012- 2013.
After conducting a survey on the number of students who will benefit from this facility, a budget of `one crore has been allotted for the purpose. There are many English medium private schools in the city. However, it is impossible for the lower income group children to seek admission there due to the heavy fees. Hence the NMMC semi English medium schools will prove to be a boon for those who wish to pursue their education in English.
What is a semi-English school?
A semi-English school, like the name suggests will teach half the subjects in English and half in the regional language. The school will not immediately change to complete English medium so as to acclimatise the students with the language. Only Science and Mathematics would be taught in English language. The other subjects will be taught either in Hindi, Marathi or Urdu as per the school pattern.
NMMC Education Committee Chairman Eknath Patil shares, “Infrastructure wise the city is fast developing, improvements must also be made in education sector. This is an important sector and should not be left behind. There are many children who wish to go to English medium schools but cannot afford it. This is a good decision taken by the civic body. The provision has been made considering the needs of the students and their financial conditions.”
For the academic year 2012-2013, the school will be started on an experimental basis and preparations for the same are on. Once the survey is completed, accordingly the teachers will be appointed for the English medium subjects
