The Shiv Sena Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) Republican Party of India (RPI) bagged the largest number of seats in the Thane Municipal Corporation elections 2012 with 62 seats. The alliance has fallen short of four seats in getting a majority of 65 seats. The Congress got 18 seats and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) bagged 34 seats. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) managed to win six seats in Thane. This election saw 778 candidates contesting for 130 seats.
The results yielded a few surprises. The biggest bonanza was received by Pratap Sarnaik, whose wife Parisha Sarnaik and son Vihang Sarnaik won in ward number 16. Vihang, 23, is said to be the youngest corporator in Thane. Ashok Vaity, former Mayor of Thane managed to bag a decent win. The results proved to be a disaster for Subhash Bhoir from Shiv Sena. Bhoir, a Member of Legislative Council and former corporator was earlier with NCP. He had defected to Shiv Sena recently as he was unhappy with the party leaders. Another unexpected result for Shiv Sena was of Pandurang Patil, former corportor and leader of house in TMC. Patil lost to Bharat Chavan of NCP.
