The subway in Domlur, meant for pedestrians crossing the busy Old Airport Road, has been in shambles for 17 years.
The subway which was constructed 17 years back by a former administrator from Domlur has never been used by pedestrians. A pile of garbage is dumped on one side of the subway and the other side of the subway is filled with stagnant sewage water. Cityplus had earlier reported about the subway menace. The subway was constructed to help pedestrians and school children cross the airport road. Despite the airport having been shifted out, the road still needs the subway, thanks to Intermediate Ring Road and Marathahalli IT industry, which has seen traffic grow manifold on the road. There are four schools near the subway and during the peak-hour traffic there is a disaster waiting to happen.
The pathetic condition of the subways makes pedestrians shy away and they use the busy roads, braving the messy traffic at a grave risk to their lives. A four feet tall subway stinks and earlier, some residents were using it as a cowshed. Now, even cows cannot stay here. The mosquitoes have made the subway their everlasting dwelling place because of the garbage piled up there. The fact that bothers the residents is: Why this subway has been allowed to remain in the present pathetic condition and why the deteriorating condition could not move the authorities to salvage it from going bad to worse.
The area residents are angry with the authorities. They feel this subway is spreading diseases in the locality. A resident says, “It is difficult for us to cross the road as there is a lot of traffic at all time. We have to use the main road. Garbage pile should be cleaned first. Place a sky walk on the road. It would be helpful for the people. So that people can easily cross to the other side of the road.”
When Cityplus spoke to MLA NA Harris, he said, “We are cleaning the subway and then we will repair it. The work will be completed soon and pedestrians can use it.”
Another resident Krishna said, “If the subway is not meant for us to cross the road, at least the authorities should clean the subway and put a sign board saying 'Stop throwing garbage'.
Speaking to Cityplus, Domlur corporator Geetha Srinivas Reddy said, “Many people have complained about the subway. I have heard that there are some illegal activities happening nearby. Garbage is also dumped inside the subway. MLA has promised to get the area cleaned soon. We will surely look into the matter.”
