Ten years ago, a little girl unintentionally stepped into her school's table tennis room and was fascinated by the game. She immediately picked up the sport and since then, it has become an inseparable part of her life. After practising for about a year, Aashita, at the tender age of eight, started playing at Jaspal Kaur Public School's inter school tennis tournament.
While she strictly devotes eight hours to sleep, tennis takes eight more hours of her day. Visiting her tennis academy is the first thing on her list. Aashita holds third rank among youth table tennis players in the North zone.
Balancing is difficult
Aashita is struggling with commerce in her higher secondary boards. School and tuitions take a lot of time and sometimes she finds it tough to balance the game and her academics. Though she has always been a bright student and scored 90 per cent marks in her tenth boards, studies don't interest her. But at the same time she believes that academics is a must and tops all priorities of life.
Favourite corner
Aashita is a creative girl and her long list of 'favourites' explains it all. She loves reading, watching movies, listening music and travelling. She has lost the count of the times she has watched 'Home Alone' and 'Jaane Tu ya Jaane Naa'.
Aashita is crazy about 'Chicken Soul Curry' series. She had finished reading the entire series when she was in ninth standard. Next on her reading list is the Twilight series which is pending since long due to her tight schedule.
A self-confessed foodie, Aashita is crazy about North Indian food. Rajma chawal satisfies her taste buds but there is no comparison when it comes to chhole bhature. Once just after recovering from jaundice, the first thing she ate was chhole bhature!
Won many tournaments
There has not been a single year, for the last seven years, that she has not played table tennis tournaments. Her dedication for the game can be judged by the fact that at a national level tournament, even jaundice did not deter her spirit of playing the game. Her medals and piles of certificates boast of her talent. She already has 19 gold, 27 silver, 21 bronze medals in her kitty.
She won silver medal at Nagpur in School Nationals 2010 which she played for the seventh year in a row. A bronze medal for the seventh consecutive year in the Open Nationals 2010 with a silver medal in doubles in the same tournament bagged her many applause.
She will be playing her eighth CBSE nationals in Varanasi in October 2011. The Delhi state tournament is also on her schedule. This will be her fourth time at these games. She played Senior Women's Nationals 2010 in Kolkata and bagged a silver medal.
Aiming high
Aashita wants to take up table tennis as her mainstream career. She said, "Table tennis is fun for me. It's a hobby, it's my love, it's a friend and I have never thought about anything else."
