After retirement, people plan long vacations, rest or tours but two residents of SJE decided to spend their time with slum children.
Ashok Sainani and PC Gupta give free tuitions, vocational and co-curricular trainings to slum children at the Recreation Centre of Safdarjung Enclave. A young lady Rima Anand has also joined them recently and all three of them are selflessly motivating children through education, absolutely free of cost.
A group of 50 children, divided between three teachers (Ashok Sainani, PC Gupta and Rima Anand), comes here daily after their school. A retired government officer, PC Gupta explains, "Giving free tuitions is not the aim. We teach them in a very practical manner. We discuss various topics with them be it environment, and other social issues."
Ashok Sainani, a retired banker and a Mathematics expert says, "Teaching these kids gives us inner satisfaction and joy. Mathematics is my favourite subject but I give tuitions for all subjects. Children don't hesitate to ask questions and I like this thing."
Initially the duo started with a smaller group of children. They had to go to the slums and create awareness on importance of education mainly to the parents. Later as and when children started joining, they brought along friends.
A biotechnology graduate, Rima Anand spends about half of her day at this recreation centre. She says, "Since these children are from a background where they have to do household jobs, they don't get much time to play and learn new things. I organise plays, debate and writing programmes for them. Earlier, when they were new, they took it as an odd job but now they enjoy it. I enjoy their company. Apart from that, English is my expertise which I share among them."
The trio also provide free computer classes to the kids. At the recreation centre the kids also avail other facilities like indoor games, library, yoga and gardening. "I like to play table tennis after tuitions at centre. I didn't know much about computers earlier but now I have made my email account and I can chat with my friends on it," said Ajit Kumar, one of the students in this group.
