Deccan Gymkhana Lokpal group recently conducted an awareness program at Kamla Nehru Park to create awareness amongst people about the significance of voting.
"Though the residents in the area are educated, the percentage of voting hovered around a mere 40050 percent during the last election. If you want an ideal candidate to represent you, please vote in greater numbers to ensure better results," said Anjali Mehendale, a member of the Lokpal group.
The program saw mixed response from the area. "Senior citizens mostly harbor preconceived notions about
elections and political parties. On the other hand, the youth, propelled by fresh ideas, has a different set of ideologies. Together, we can bring about a positive wae of change for the betterment of society," said Rajesh Shende, member of the Ghole road Lokpal group. "Non-awareness about election dates and candidates are the major reasons resulting in low voting percentages. Many people are unaware of most details, a sad state indeed," Shende added.
While talking about her experience, Mehendale said, "Based on our interactions with people, we project that at least 70 plus per cent voting can be achieved. However, greater awareness is needed." Agreeing with the sentiment, Shende added, "The awareness programs should be run on a large scale to ensure a healthy response; collective effort from all sections of the society is the need of the hour."
