Yoga champion at 10

A master in Yoga, Shivani Sharma aspires to be a doctor as well

She is just 10 years old, but Shivani Sharma is a national champion in yoga. She started yoga when she was in class III and unlike children of her age, she is very serious about her work.

Love for Yoga
Her mother Jyoti Sharma, a teacher, recalls her daughter's sudden inclination for yoga. "One day, Shivani suddenly said she wanted to join yoga classes. She was already into swimming, skating and karate at that time but seeing her inclination towards yoga we asked her teacher Poonam Saini about it and that was the beginning. Without completing her daily routine, she never goes to bed." Now Shivani has won almost all the yoga competitions wherever she has participated.
Shivani's yoga teacher Saini says, "She loves doing difficult asanas. She does it with perfection which is difficult even for a matured yoga practitioner. She has a unique talent of grasping and her body supports it."
"Yoga is my passion and I want to achieve international level achievement in this field," says Shivani.Her twin brother Shivam feels proud in decorating her medals and trophies.

The practice and learning
Shivani, student of SVIS practises yoga every day after completing her home work in the evening. These days, she is busy in preparing for the national yoga competition. She is a keen learner and she searches new techniques on internet and with the help of her teacher she learns the correct procedure. "I love to watch yoga clips and new techniques in yoga. I always try to find something new."

Favourite pastimes
Shivani loves to watch cartoon, play games on the computer and eat chocolates. She is also a good skater and swimmer and participates in school-level competitions. She says, "I love to move on wheels or in water. Also I am a green belt in martial art."

Aspires to be a doctor
A bright student of class V in Sri Venkteshwar International School, Sector 18, she aims to become a doctor. She loves reading science. "I want to serve the poor as a doctor," she says.

An achiever
Daughter of Anuj Sharma, a software engineer, Shivani has achieved many milestones in the field of yoga. She is three times Delhi state champion and she has recently won CBSE Zonal Yoga competition as well. She participated only once in the National Yoga Championship at Haridwar in 2010 and won gold.
