In 1995, Shiv Sena opened 15 Zunka Bhakar Kendra outlets across the city to sell food at subsidised prices. But, the kendras were closed down in a few years, because the concerned authorities have failed to make proper use of the premises allotted to the kendras.
It is alleged that the owners are running their private businesses at the kendras. Most of the kendras have now turned into grocery shops, restaurants among others.
Sudhakar Kamble, a resident of Nerul, says, “No one is concerned about such plots of Navi Mumbai and these are being used by their owners for making money.”
“The owners have leased the plots to other people. The premises can be used for commercial purposes, but only for the benefit of residents. Unfortunately, no one is paying heed towards this,” says Arvind Gaikwad, another resident.
An Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation official on condition of anonymity says, "The spaces were allotted to the owners when the scheme was introduced in the State. As we don't have any substitute schemes, the owners are still using the spaces to run their businesses However, we will take a decision and use those plots for other productive purpose."
